The goal of The Historic Avenue Foundation is to help end generational poverty--- in direct collaboration with community members---by using a holistic approach that focuses on building mixed-income housing, investing in equitable education, and providing transformational community wellness programs.
Approach
We fundamentally believe in the importance of building authentic relationships while working with everyone in our community. This approach to holistic community revitalization is inspired by the Purpose Built Communities model and nationally proven to enact transformational change and break the cycle of generational poverty. Working together with community members, our goal is to catalyze transformational change, innovatively meet the needs of the community, and close the opportunity gap. Not only does this improve well-being and quality of life for neighborhood residents, it also impacts far beyond the property lines to provide upward economic mobility for the neighborhood.
HISTORIC DAVIS AVENUE
Explore the rich history of Davis Avenue, once a thriving hub of Black businesses, culture, and community in Mobile, Alabama, through this series of stories by local writer, Lynn Oldshue. The Avenue, renamed Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in 1986, was a 2-mile stretch that served as a center for commerce, entertainment, and socializing for Black Mobilians who faced segregation in other parts of the city. Businesses, including Finley's Pharmacy No. 1, played a crucial role in supporting the community, offering services, and fostering a sense of unity.
In the first of this series, “Life on The Avenue,” Oldshue delves into the memories of residents, the vibrant music scene, and the challenges faced by the community, particularly during urban renewal efforts that led to the demolition of historical buildings. Despite physical changes, the story emphasizes the importance of remembering and celebrating the accomplishments of those who shaped Davis Avenue's legacy.
