Fuse in the Community: Building Connections Beyond the Classroom
At Fuse Project, our work extends far beyond school walls. While education, wellness, and housing remain at the heart of our mission, meaningful change happens through relationships, partnerships, and community engagement. Throughout the first half of 2026, Fuse Project was proud to support and participate in a variety of events and initiatives that brought people together, celebrated local achievements, and created opportunities for children and families across our community.
SENIOR BOWL PLAYERS INSPIRE AVENUE STUDENTS
One of the year's most exciting moments came during Community Day with the Senior Bowl. Players visited both Florence Howard Elementary School and Calloway-Smith Middle School, spending time with students, sharing encouragement, answering questions, and demonstrating what leadership, perseverance, and community involvement look like in action.
At Florence Howard, students met Collin Wright (Stanford), Ephesians Prysock (Washington), Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), Rahsul Faison (South Carolina), and Jordan Hudson (SMU). At Calloway-Smith, students heard from Harrison Wallace (Ole Miss), Dani Dennis-Sutton (Penn State), Hezekiah Masses (California), Reggie Virgil (Texas Tech), Kaytron Allen (Penn State), and Fred Davis (Northwestern).
Fuse Project was also honored to distribute Senior Bowl tickets to teachers and students throughout the Avenue community, allowing even more families to participate in one of Mobile's most beloved annual traditions.
A special thank you goes to volunteers Doug Whitmore, Mary Hunter Fuller, Savannah Valle, Erin Delaporte, Jeff Carter, Riley Bridges, Ann Cortopassi, and Jane Barnett for helping make the day possible. Experiences like these remind students that their community is invested in their success and that big dreams can start right here at home.
CELEBRATING COMMUNITY THROUGH SOULFUL SOUNDS OF THE SEASON
During the holiday season, Fuse Project proudly sponsored the 5th Annual Soulful Sounds of the Season on the Avenue hosted by Vivian's Door. The event brought neighbors, families, and community partners together for an evening filled with music, connection, holiday cheer, and meaningful moments.
From powerful musical performances and a thoughtful mental health and mindfulness moment to photos with Santa and festive family activities, the event showcased the importance of creating opportunities for joy, celebration, and togetherness within the Avenue community. Events like these strengthen neighborhood connections and reinforce the sense of belonging that helps communities thrive.
SUPPORTING STUDENT-ATHLETES AT CALLOWAY-SMITH
Sports provide students with valuable opportunities to develop teamwork, discipline, leadership, and confidence. This spring, Fuse Project was grateful to partner with the Rotary Club of Mobile through a generous grant supporting the Calloway-Smith Middle School basketball program.
The funding helped purchase much-needed equipment and hydration supplies to support student-athletes throughout the season. The investment paid off both on and off the court, with the girls' team advancing to the semifinals and the boys' team capturing a championship title.
While the trophies and wins are exciting, the greatest impact comes from the life skills students gain through athletics and the confidence they build along the way.
CELEBRATING LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS THROUGH THE SCOUT GUIDE MOBILE BAY
This spring, Fuse Project was honored to be featured in Volume 9 of The Scout Guide Mobile Bay, a curated guide highlighting outstanding local businesses, organizations, and creatives who help make the Mobile Bay area a special place to live, work, and visit.
The launch celebration, held at Crown Hall, brought together community leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, and supporters from across the region. The evening showcased many of the local businesses and partners that continue to strengthen Mobile's vibrant community, while also highlighting organizations like Fuse Project that are working to create positive change throughout the area.
We are grateful to The Scout Guide Mobile Bay for including Fuse Project among the many organizations featured and for their continued support of our work, including their partnership through Oyster Revel benefiting SPARK Summer Camp.
COMMUNITY TOY DRIVES CREATE LASTING IMPACT
The holiday season also brought several opportunities for community members to invest directly in local children.
Fuse Project was proud to partner with LaBaron Philon for his Holiday Toy Giveaway at Murphy High School. The event provided free toys and haircuts for children while bringing together volunteers and donors committed to making the holidays brighter for local families.
We were equally grateful for the generosity of Ashland Place Preschool and its annual holiday toy drive. Thanks to their support, the Florence Howard Elementary School Store received an incredible collection of incentives including sports equipment, craft kits, mini electronics, Squishmallows, and other prizes that students can earn through positive behavior, academic growth, and achievement.
Those donations continue to make an impact long after the holiday season ends, helping create meaningful moments of encouragement and recognition for students throughout the school year.
STRONG COMMUNITIES CREATE STRONGER OPPORTUNITIES
While each of these initiatives may look different on the surface, they all share a common thread: community investment. Whether it's athletes mentoring students, businesses supporting schools, neighbors gathering to celebrate the holidays, or donors contributing to student incentives, every act of support helps strengthen opportunities for children and families.
At Fuse Project, we know meaningful change requires more than programs alone. It takes partnerships, volunteers, community leaders, and people who believe every child deserves access to opportunities that help them learn, grow, and succeed.
We are grateful to every organization, volunteer, donor, educator, business, and community member who has joined us in that work so far this year. Together, we are helping ensure that every child deserves an opportunity to succeed, regardless of their ZIP code.
