Read Across America Day at FHES

We have had a very busy year so far in the Avenue community. In addition to our annual Lip Sync Battle fundraiser benefiting The Historic Avenue Foundation, we have celebrated literacy, Black history, and school spirit. We are also working diligently to prepare for the 2022 launch of our new K3 program! Be sure to stay tuned to our social media channels for updates on the latest news and volunteer opportunities in the Avenue community.

Read Across America Day

“Open a book, find a treasure.” On Friday, March 4, we had the opportunity to visit Florence Howard Elementary School to read to the students in honor of Read Across America Day. Members of Fuse Project staff, board of directors, and Order of Fuse were greeted by teachers and students wearing hats and fascinators to celebrate the day and enjoyed engaging with and reading to children from PreK to 2nd grade.

Pettus Bridge Crossing - Selma, Alabama

We were honored to sponsor a group of students to attend the Annual Pettus Bridge Crossing in Selma, Alabama on Sunday, March 6 with People United to Advance the Dream in recognition of the 57th anniversary of the attack on civil rights protesters that became known as Bloody Sunday. Vice President Kamala Harris was in attendance and addressed the crowd, reflecting on the current fight for voting rights.

FHES Spirit Week

For Spirit Week at Florence Howard Elementary School, we sponsored faculty t-shirts in an effort to help encourage students as state testing began.

Events like these are vital to our mission in The Avenue by allowing us to connect with the residents and forge relationships in the community so that we can work hand in hand together to create transformational change and break the cycle of poverty.
